Kopen Take Pii Festival
Kopen Village, Wabag District
1st - 3rd JULY, 2026
PRESERVING & PROMOTING CULTURE

The Kopen Take Pii Festival festival aims to preserve and promote the indigenous cultural resources of the Enga people, which are increasingly under pressure from modern global influences.
The name "Take Pii" relates to the deep oral traditions of the region. In Enga culture, Pii (speech/word) is central to identity, with genres like Tindi Pii (chanted tales for entertainment and esoteric knowledge) being vital to their cultural heritage. The festival serves as a platform to keep these "dying out" traditions alive.
Festival Highlights
Haus Man & Research Centre: The festival has marked the official opening of a Haus Man (Traditional Engan Men's House) and a Cultural Research Centre to display traditional artifacts and tourism products.
Traditional Performances: Includes traditional singing, rituals, courtship displays, and string band performances.
Exhibitions: Showcases traditional crafts, sand painting, and a specialized Bilum Exhibition.
Community Impact: The event is used to engage young men and women in socio-economic activities to address local issues like tribal conflicts, law and order, and gender-based violence.
The festival coincides with an Eco-tourism Conservation Exhibition and highlights the three core objectives: facilitating access to culture, promoting diversity, and fostering independent thinking among youth
