Celebrating the "white gold" of Enga 

The Pilikambi Tumbuna Salt Festival is a cultural event that celebrates the ancient art of salt making, a practice that historically placed the region at the center of a vast highlands trade network. It takes place around one of the many high altitude springs of salty water the bubbles up from underground. 

The salt festival is a revitalisation ancient skills from a time when this "white gold” of Enga, was a source of wealth and influence for the people living around the salt ponds.

WHAT TO EXPECT

 

Salt Extraction Demonstrations: Experts demonstrate how specific tree logs (such as Auwek or Kaina) are submerged in salt ponds for up to 18 months, dried, and then burned to extract salty ashes.

 

Barter Re-enactments: Showcases the historic trade system where salt was exchanged for crude body oil (mamb), feathers, stone axes, and kina shells with tribes from the Southern Highlands and beyond.

Cultural Performances: Traditional dances, including the singsing, are performed by locals in traditional attire and elaborate wigs.

​

Traditional rope bridge construction:  to signify pathways for the salt trade which moved goods and services will cross rivers and gorges.

 

Farmers showcase: Fresh produce highlighting the area's rich agriculture and gardening culture.

VISITOR INFORMATION

Location: Mulisos Village, Pilikambi LLG, in the Laiagam District of Enga Province.

Transportation: Travelers usually fly into Wapenamanda Airport and drive approximately 45 minutes to Wabag, the provincial capital, before heading to the Lagaip District.

​

·Accommodation: Options include the Yaskom Resort Hotel overlooking Lake Surunki or lodges in Wabag town

 

Festival Activities: Attendees can witness the process of making salt, along with traditional performances.

​

Peace Initiative: The festival has served to unite warring tribes, fostering peace to allow for cultural celebration.
